Audience- Reseach into the BBFC classification guidelines

Audience- Research into the The BBFC classification guidelines

these guidelines affect the age limit to watch the film and what the film would classify as either a U, PG, 12, 12A, 15 OR AN 18. They decide what age limit for a film should be on behalf of the local authorities who licence cinemas under the licensing act of 2003. The BBFC has the right to protect children from any harm or influences which may be caused from the films, if neccessary the BBFC may cut or even reject a film/video/movie if they feel it is uterly unacceptable.

To apply for the passing of the BBFC guidelines there are three main quilifications in which you have to overview before you begin.

1) whether the material is in conflict with law or has been created through the use of illegelness.

2) wheter the material contains content that can cause harm at the category it is concerning.

when making your film you have to consider it not to include harm that may result in bad behavior from the viewers , furthermore you consider moral harm that could be caused so it should not include encouragment of a dehumanised view of others and suppressing an anti- social attitude and reinforcing an unhealthy imagination.

3)wheter the availability of the material in content at the age group concerned is clearly unacceptableto the broad public opinion. BBFC intervines with bad language thats what changes the guildlines for each film.

The categories/ classification guidelines.

''U Universal" –Suitable for all.It is impossible to predict what might upset any particular child. But a ‘U’ film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. ‘U’ films should be set within a positive moral framework and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror. If a work is particularly suitable for a pre-school child to view alone, this will be indicated in the Consumer Advice.'' it would give you a maximum audience  however you would not be able to fill the conventions of a thriller film with this age limit because you would not be able to put in the criteria of a thriller. viewer is to young to view.

so i can assume a 'U' film is suitable for all ages for the use of bad language is not in use. moreover there is no reference to illegal drugs or drug misuse. The behavior of al characters are pristine for children would copy the good behavior.

A 'PG' film

''general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. unaccompinied children of any age may watch, this guideline should not disturb a child around the age 8 or older, however parent is advised to consider wheter the content may upset younger or more sensitive children.'' this is the same as a universal it would get the maximum audience however a thriller would not be suitable for this genre because the viewers are to young and may influence there behavior.

this applies the same guildlines for a universal film because the misuse of bad language, drugs, weapons, themes that may cause harm or danger to the individuals mental and physical state is not allowed in these sort of movies.

A 12/12a film
The certificate 12 is suitable for the ages of 12 years and over. Discriminatory language and behavior must not be endorsed but to allow, aggressive language and behavior is less likely to appear and drug use must be infrequent and should not be glamorised, as a moderate physical and phychological threat may be permitted but no disturbing scenes are allowed. sexual activity must be minimal for they are classified as young teenagers. this age limit can watch some thrillers but it would be still explicit , thrillers are more suitable for 15 year olds.

A 15 film
''No one younger than a 15 may see a 15 film in the cinema no one under the age of 15 may rent or buy a 15 rated film.'' The film must not discriminate on a whole however drug taken can now be shown but not used in a way to promote this sort of behavior. The film can now have strong scenes of horror and dangerous behavior to add excitement to the film but also this use of weapons and danger should not be highlighted. nudity is now allowed also with some sexual scenes for the viewer is old enough and mature enough to distinguish there own thoughts.violence is also acceptable but strong scenes of torturing is not yet encouraged in a 15 film. thrillers are accepted and shown under this age limit, at this age the thriller genre can include much of its material but not too graphic .

A 18 film
This is only for adults all people over the age of 18, no one under this given age can view/rent/buy a movie that is under the age limit.

Nearly all sexual scenes are allowed, alonside the use of danger, drugs and nudity because the viewer has reached a age where they are suitable to watch this all. they are allowed to watch adult things without risk of being influenced because there minds have fully developed and they have become there own person. at 18 thrillers can be seen to the full extent and every criteria that a thriller should include can be included in this for the viewer is now old enough to accept the violence and swearing, the prostitution and all others..

I think most suitable age for a thriller genre will be either a 15 or a 18 because it allows you to use the techniques and characteristics that a thriller must have. this is perfect for our film because our age limit is aimed at 15 to 25 year olds because it involves much characteristics of a thriller but not to graphic furthermore this is the age limit were it can reach the conventions of a thriller.
